Restaurant Review: Bistro Du Midi

This restaurant was listed on my Bucket List post from a couple weeks ago! One of my friends from college, Devon, is an assistant pastry chef at Bistro Du Midi and received an awesome employee of the month gift card in recognition of her hard work! She decided to share the gift card with me so we could eat our hearts out!

Bistro Du Midi is located at 272 Boylston Street, Boston MA. It’s a 2 minute walk from the Arlington T stop on the green line so it’s very easy to find. The restaurant is two floors with the kitchen being on the second floor. The view from the second floor overlooks the Boston Public Gardens! This place is definitely full of class, so dress up! The food and drinks were amazing too so let’s not dilly dally anymore:

Everything was so yummy! My personal favorites were the Smoked Asparagus Soup, Salmon Crudite, Duck Breast and the Ice Cream Flight! Such a great experience and service was impeccable. We each got awesome drinks that were well balanced and tasty. I definitely recommend this place for a splurge night out! Devon’s gift card was for $150 so after that, her employee discount and the free plates that were sent to us, the bill was ONLY 12 DOLLARS! I literally couldn’t have asked for a better deal or experience!

Restaurant Review: Kirkland Tap & Trotter

Boston has WAY too many restaurants. I feel like no matter how many places I try, my list doesn’t get any shorter. Perhaps this is because I keep adding new places to my list… ugh my poor wallet! This place was a particular brunch treat because I was able to share it with my boyfriend Nick and eat some  pretty fantastic food.

Kirkland Tap & Trotter is located on 425 Washington Street in Somerville, Massachusetts. It’s a 15 minute walk from the Harvard T stop on the Red Line. Tony Maws is the chef and entrepreneur of Kirkland along with another acclaimed restaurant Craigie on Main. Kirkland Tap & Trotter  used to be The Kirkland Cafe under different ownership and really embodied connecting with the community and being the best dive bar around town. Kirkland Tap & Trotter maintains some of that dive bar/neighborhood charm with innovative menu items.

I won’t lie, but this brunch was on the pricier side but I can promise worth every penny. Nick and I started with their housemade donut with apple cider glaze. Service was very attentive and they were great at upselling their products hence us buying into a “brunch appetizer”. Not that donuts are ever a hard sell for us… Overall, perfectly sweet donut and fluffy. Perfect sharing size pre-brunch entree.

I ordered the mushroom and reggiano frittata served with a winter vegetable salad and housemade foccacia. Despite being an avid olive hater, the salad and frittata were a great balance for each other. I especially loved the reggiano crusted on top of the frittata! I want more right now just thinking about it!

Nick ordered the Crispy Fried Bone-In Pork Chop and it was the best decision of his life. It was served with a fried egg, parsnip puree and foccacia bread. I coudn’t not try a bite with Nick proclaiming how amazing it was. The pork chop was so tender and rich and was enhanced by the fried egg. The foccacia would be great to sop up whatever was left on the plate too! Ugh, I’m still dreaming about that bite.

Kirkland Tap & Trotter is fun for drinks at night as well as they have a fairly creative drink menu. Perfect for casual drinks where you can sit at a table and actually converse with friends. I would definitely recommend KTT to friends!

Restaurant Review: Amada!

To kick off the beginning of my trip back to Pennsylvania to see my family, my sister and I spent a night in Philly during Restaurant Week! My sister is a graphic designer for the University of Pennsylvania, and so when I flew into the PHL airport, I just grabbed a train into Center City to meet her! Knowing that I’m a foodie, Steph and I planned on picking a restaurant from the list that most interested us. The winner was a place called Amada!
Amada is a Spanish tapas place created by Chef Jose Garces opened in 2005. Perfectly tucked away in the Old City neighborhood, Amada is located at 217-219 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia PA. It’s less than a 5 minute walk off of the subway stop at 2nd Street.
Upon entry, we were pleasantly greeted and they graciously stored my luggage in a separate room for safe keeping throughout our meal. We were lead through half of the dining room that accommodates both large and small parties and sits adjacent to an open kitchen where 6 lucky diners might sit during service. The décor was simple but rustic and while the seating arrangements were close together, each party still felt private.

Being that it was restaurant week, their menu was limited but still offered a variety of choices. For our 3 course meal, we each had the option of 2 small plates per course, which meant that my sister and I could share 8 plates and 2 desserts. We were SO stoked. The sangria came strongly recommended by two of her staff members and we weren’t disappointed.

First course:

These cheeses were SO delicious. I don’t know if it’s because we were both starving but it was the perfect opener to our meal. I also loved that they served granny apple slices with the bread, cheese and dips because it really elevated the cheese plate!

819Tortilla Espanola: Spanish tortilla and saffron aioli

This was probably my least favorite course of the meal, but it was still pretty tasty! The inside tasted sort of like a potato which I wasn’t expecting but it paired great with saffron aioli.

These were outta this world! Small but mighty, they were served with a red pepper puree and I could’ve devoured an entire platter of them by myself!

Second Course:

815Coca de Costillas de Ternera: Flatbread with Beef Short Ribs, Horseradish, Parmesan, Bacon

This flatbread was perfect for sharing between two people. The beef short ribs were tender and the parm and bacon really blew its flavor out of the water!

817Esparragos Con Trufas: Grilled Asparagus, Poached Egg, Mahon Crisp, Truffles

This had to be my FAVORITE course of the night. I’ve really been digging asparagus lately and this dish was tender and served in a garlic butter sauce. Once the poached egg was broken, the sauce became even more rich and dynamic! I would’ve even loved to have a piece of bread accompanying the plate so I could sop up all the delicious aftermath.

818Panceta: Crispy Pork Belly, Cauliflower Puree, Rioja Shallot Jam, Boquerone Salsa Verde

This pork belly was very tender and fatty, but in a way that it melts in your mouth. The cauliflower puree mellows out the fattiness of the pork belly and the shallot jam added a dash of sweetness.

Dessert:

814Tocinillo de Cielo: Citrus Vanilla, Pistachio

This dessert was peculiar but awesome! It was almost like a custard or yogurt but sweet. A citrus foam laid nicely on top with a dash of cocoa nibs. It was a nice light dessert after a heavily flavored meal!

813Tarta de Chocolate: Dark Chocolate Tart, Orange

This tart was small but mighty. The chocolate in the tart was intense and rich but was cut by the orange segment and sauce on the plate.

As always, there aren’t many restaurants I meet that I don’t like, but this one really took the cake! I’m glad to have been able to experience a great restaurant during a discount week and share so many unique dishes with my sister!

Restaurant Review: No. 9 Park!

I most recently went to an excellent restaurant in the heart of Boston called No. 9 Park! It’s located at (you guessed it…) 9 Park Street, Boston MA. You can easily take the green or red line to the park street stop and walk only minutes to their entrance. The location is one that can’t be beat- right across from Boston Commons and caddy corner to the new state house.

As per usual, one of my friends used to work at No. 9 so we were treated to some really excellent service and a couple free appetizers. No. 9 is a restaurant on the pricier side, so the way we tackle these restaurants is to go for ‘zerts, apps and drinks. Perfect for sharing and usually leave feeling satisfied but not stuffed to the brim. And it’s friendly on your wallet as well!
The service was impeccable. It’s a smaller restaurant but the service staff was very attentive and polite as they took my coat upon arrival, walked me to the restroom when asked, refilled water glasses effortlessly and anticipated our needs at every turn. Usually with restaurant reviews, I can go pretty in depth to each dish but sometimes it’s nice to go out to eat to just enjoy the company of others. Overall, I had a lot of fun with friends and I loved trying new dishes to share! My top favorite of the night included the Prime Steak Tartare and Apple Beignet. This is the perfect place to go for a special celebration or purely as a culinary adventure. I’m slowly checking things off my Boston bucket list!

Restaurant Review- Tiger Mama!

I’m so excited to share my experience at the newly opened restaurant Tiger Mama  in the Fenway area! Located at 1363 Boylston Street and a short walk from the Fenway T stop on the green line (D), this restaurant opened the second week of December 2015. Eater, Boston Globe, Zagat and Boston Magazine are among a few of the press that reported their anticipated opening! I feel quite lucky that I was able to watch this restaurant tick only days after their doors opened!

Tiffani Faison and her wife, Kelly Walsh imagined the concept for Tiger Mama through their travels in Southeast Asia. Their food isn’t strictly traditional to region but rather inspired by many memorable dishes and flavors. Tiffani opened Sweet Cheeks Q a few years previous and also competed on Top Chef- just a few drops in the bucket to prove her credibility!

My friend from college, Frank, is a true foodie so I love going out to dinner to try new restaurants and dishes with him! He used to work with two front of house managers at Tiger Mama, Dana and Heather, and wanted to visit! As soon as we arrived, the vibe was very cool, laid back and authentic. Eagerly greeted at the door by the hostess and a blinged out elephant, we were seated in the center of action allowing us a view of  either end of the restaurant.

Super unique in design, there is an array of seating arrangements available for small or large parties. The menu is similar- full of small plates and larger portions meant to share. There are also two bars at either end of the restaurant. They  feature two different drink menus and are served across the restaurant. One of the bars even features a tiki drink menu!

At the rear of the restaurant lays an open kitchen with a chef’s table available for reservation. The decor fully matches the menu as funky and fresh- live palm trees, a living plant wall, and a cool neon sign reading, “TALK DON’T, COOK RICE”.

Pleasantly greeted by our waiter, Patrick, we dove into the menu eagerly discussing what we wanted to try. Despite only being open two weeks, Patrick had many suggestions for both the drink and food menu and could recommend things based on our individual palettes. You could tell he was very passionate about the industry and was especially excited about the work happening at Tiger Mama.

Let’s get to the good stuff- the food.

As we were deciding what the order, the kitchen sent us the Lobster Fresh Rolls: charred lobster, bright veggies and spicy silky peanut sauce.

This was the perfect introductory course to the rest of our meal. These lobster rolls were super fresh, crunch, sweet and the heat from the peanut sauce warmed the palette for an overall nice balance. YUM. I could probably eat a hundred of these and never get sick of it!

Crispy Garlic Prawns “LOS”: garlicky shrimp, crackly shells, brown butter

This was INCREDIBLE. The shrimp were so delicious and the shells weren’t characteristically greasy like fried foods. The shrimp sat on top of charred and salted cabbage and scallions. The crunch to soft ratio of this dish was spot on!

Chili Spiced Short Rib Crudo: rich chili seared short rib, herb “salad”, black vinaigrette, charred leeks.

Not my favorite dish but only for the fact that I’m really sensitive to spicy components. While the dish was very spicy, the short rib was tender and mellow and acted a great dish to share!

Lamb Roli: brickfields spiced and braised lamb, crispy roti, holy basil raita, mint cilantro jam

Frank ordered this dish and was ooh-ing and ahh-ing as he ate it! It’s presentation was simple and could also act as a dish to share.

Despite how full I was, the rice was SO delicious. It was meaty and salty without being overpowering. The rice was perfectly cooked and supported many different textures.

Lastly, for dessert we ordered the Milk Toast! A piece of brioche soaked in coconut milk or an anglaise and then seared on a flat top. Simple, pure and delicious.

Frank and I also ordered two rounds  of drinks throughout the meal! My first drink was fruity and girly with a twist of tang while Frank ordered a drink that focused more on the spirit.  The second drink we ordered was delivered with crushed ice in a large golden pineapple- equally delicious! And to top off the night, Chef Tiffani Faison made her rounds in the dining room connecting with guests!

Overall, I had an incredible dining experience at Tiger Mama! Everything from service, to seating and decor and especially the food, was outstanding. You could definitely sense the passion from the workers in both their service style and food. This is a restaurant you won’t want to miss! I can only imagine their success for the future and cannot wait to make my return trip soon.

Restaurant Review: Naco Taco!

Naco Taco was a food truck in Boston that recently took their success and transformed their ideas into a restaurant. Located on 297 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Naco Taco is easily accessible by T (short walking distance from Central Square or Kendall Square stops) and buses. They opened their doors while I was working at Flour across the street so I couldn’t wait to finally check them out!

647The restaurant sports a large outdoor patio with the actual food truck parked right on the premise. While there was regular table-side service, the servers grabbed some of the food ordered from the windows of the food truck. Our waiter was super nice and attentive and did a great job at trying to up-sell the menu asking if we would want chips and salsa or second rounds of drinks.

646 648Their drink menu featured numerous Mexican beer, beer cocktails and a few wine/sangria options. What I really like about their food menu was that you can literally order as much or as little as you want. The pricing on the menu is based per taco so you can easily predict what you’ll be getting. I ordered an al pastor taco and a side of street corn to share with my friend.

The al pastor taco was made with spit roasted pork and burnt pineapple. It was the perfect size for a light lunch with my side of street corn. I think the taco could’ve been a little more flavorful or feature a sauce to keep it from being too dry. I would give the taco 3 Abby stars.

644The street corn is what got me. I love corn, especially in the summer. And I love nothing more than corn smothered in cotija cheese. Depending on the week, the street corn is prepared in different ways, but ours came with cotija, pine nuts and thin slices of peppers. I can dig it. 5/5 Abby stars.

645My friend also got their chips and salsa which was pretty good! I would definitely recommend this place as a meet up spot for after work drinks and light apps. The patio is awesome for the summer and the inside of the restaurant is pretty large with a cool, relaxed vibe. Definitely a great addition to Central Square!

Restaurant Review: Sofra Bakery!

I have a small history with this bakery! When I was finishing up my internship before graduation, I sent resume after resume to any place in Boston I was vaguely interested in. I had heard from a co-worker about this cool bakery called Sofra that focuses on using a middle eastern influence!

Ultimately, I ended up interviewing there and loving every moment of it but took an offer at Flour when it presented itself. All in all, I still had a great impression of Sofra and eventually wanted to go back as a customer. Maaaaybe it took me a little too long to go back (almost two years… oops), I finally managed to go!

616Sofra Bakery is located at 1 Belmont Street in Cambridge, MA. Right off of Mount Auburn street, it’s definitely accessible off of the 71 bus, and probably numerous others I’m unaware of. The bakery has a teeny tiny shared parking lot with just barely enough space for 8 cars but the surrounding streets are available for 2 hour parking.

Created by Chef Ana Sortun and Pastry Chef Maura Kilpatrick, the bakery is owned by Oleana Restaurant Group and works in conjunction with Oleana (the restaurant) and Siena Farms (where they source local products!). A store front selling Siena Farms products is located in the South End and I’m dying to go try out Oleana at some point! They’re also starting to do cooking classes in the fall!

617The bakery has a cute little porch for outdoor seating and a few tight tables inside accentuated by adorable middle eastern cushions and decorations. On the far wall in the back is an entire selection of retail products for sale as well as a cold case filled with grab and go items.

My roommate and I wanted to share everything (as usual) so we went for their egg sandwich, semolina pancakes, cheese danish and orange blossom morning bun!

624We started with the semolina pancakes topped with seasonal fruit. To be honest, the fruit was so sweet that I had trouble telling if they were peaches or apricots… (peaches, I think?). The fruit was cooked down into a syrup which replaced the typical maple syrup. The pancakes were the texture of a crepe except thicker. I was hoping that they might be a bit crunchier or offer a change in texture but they were still pretty tasty! A decent deal for $5!

621 619Next. we tackled the egg sandwich made with halumi, feta butter and bacon. Pretty sure it was the feta butter that sold us so easily- YUUUUUM. The bun was toasted and seasoned with black sesame seeds. The halumi and feta butter were SO good and I want them to be on every sandwich I ever eat for the rest of my life.

623The cheese danish was not a normal cheese danish… This one was made with raspberry, figs and sprinkled with pearl sugar. Which cheese danishes aren’t my favorite, my roommate really enjoyed this! And I thought it photographed the best of our spread, so I guess I can’t hate on it too much!

615I saved the best for last- the orange blossom morning bun. If you don’t know what a morning bun is, it’s basically chopped up pieces of brioche mixed together with cinnamon and sugar that, when cooked, becomes caramelized and gooey and delicious. THEN ADD ORANGE BLOSSOM ICING ON TOP!? Boom, delicious. All flavors I love. GET IN MY BELLY.

Allie Hale- Shack Shake Manager!

I met Allie on our first day in college in the communal bathroom both clumsily trying to figure out how to assemble our Brita water pitchers. After making a little bit of small talk trying to figure out how work those god damn things, I realized we would be fast friends living down the hall from one another. Allie was probably the exact opposite of someone I had been friends with in high school- she was always experimenting with crazy hair colors, went out to party on the week days and was full of mischief. Maybe opposites attract because we’ve been inseparable best friends since meeting.

Allie and I were roommates our senior year of college and then made the plunge to move to Boston over a year and a half ago. She’s absolutely my ride or die and I’m so proud of what she’s accomplished so far in her career. A company called Shake Shack did an introduction in one of our classrooms and she was immediately hooked on the personality of the company and the ideals they personify.

600Shake Shack started as a tiny hot dog cart in Madison Square park in 2001 and has since grown into a large and ever expanding quick service restaurant over the past 15 years. Allie and I both graduated with the same degree- Baking & Pastry Arts and Food Service Management but we’ve gone two completely different routes with our degrees. Allie is currently a manager for the Dedham, MA branch and is looking to move to California within the next year to help open new storefronts.

I convinced Allie to let me interview her about her job to share some more insight about the vast world of food service with you guys! Check it out below!

Abby: Shake Shack has a huge following. How have you drank the Kool-aid? 

Allie: I think I drank the kool-aid the moment I realized what a great company Shake Shack is. The more I learned about them, the more I knew I wanted to work for them. In terms of their following, I’m surprised everyday about how enthusiastic people are about our food, our culture and our personality. I’m just happy to be a part of it.

Abby: What does your role as a manager entail? What are some daily struggles and rewards?

Allie: When most people think about a manager, they would think of someone who is behind the scenes and solves problems when they arise. I’ve learned that my role is much more. On a daily basis, I order all of our products from multiple vendors, make sure we are fully staffed, hire new team members, handle private events, coordinate volunteer opportunities in our community, work through issues between team members, organize training, payroll and facility issues but most importantly ensure guests have a great experience with us. Since working for Shake Shack, I’ve developed my skills as a friend, co-worker, boss, therapist, mom, parole officer, plumber and handyman but know that I make my Shack a better place day in and day out make it much easier.

Abby: Was going to Johnson & Wales University a good experience for you? Has your education added to your experience in your career?

Allie: Johnson & Wales definitely played a huge role in my position with Shake Shack. I never would’ve heard about Shake Shack until my area director came to one of my management classes. She sold me so hard on Shake Shack and I knew instantly that I wanted to work there. The networking at Johnson & Wales was readily available if I needed it. In terms of skills, I use pretty much zero of my baking degree which is fine with me. I definitely use some of the skills from my hospitality and management classes but are they things I could’ve learned on the job? Yeah for sure. I’ve learned so much more first-hand since graduation. Sometimes I do feel like I paid for a name and networking but so many people in the industry feel that way. Either way, I wouldn’t have done anything differently.

Abby: What are your future goals with Shake Shack or with your career in general?

Allie: My future goals with Shake Shack currently are to move west in hopes of securing a regional training position. I definitely want to get my name in a new market and make a difference there. I’m so thankful my job can take me all over geographically. Not to mention all of the growth potential and skills I can learn along the way. I would love to be that person that travels to locations to help set up training infrastructures that helps make Shake Shack a better place. We shall see!

Abby: Why are you in the industry? Where does the drive come from?

Allie: I remember my chef in high school telling my classmates about some of the sacrifices you make for this industry: family, life, holidays, a social life, fully functioning knees by the time you’re 50… But the way I feel about the work I do and the differences I make with my team keep me coming back day after day. My confidence of knowing I’ve done a good job is irreplaceable. I love seeing the process from beginning to end: ringing a customer on cash and helping them to make a menu choice, hopping on bun to start an order, then onto expo to finish the order with my staff to finally watching a guest loving every minute of it… I know they’ll be back and that’s the best feeling in the world.
